It has been sixty years since the first baptisms in Derry/Londonderry and, at an event held in November 2017 at the Foyle Ward meeting-house to celebrate this landmark occasion, Councillor Maolíosa McHugh, Mayor of Derry and Strabane, spoke of the influence for good that the Church has been in both the City and local community.
James Parker of the Belfast Stake Presidency expressed appreciation to the Mayor for his attendance and also spoke of the growing influence of the Church. He reminded the local members of their responsibility to invite others to “Come unto Christ”.
Among those in attendance were Robert & Heather Smyth, Audrey Douglas and Nellie Olphert, four of those originally baptised all those years ago, and who still today attend the Foyle (originally Londonderry) Ward.
The "Derry News" newspaper provided a full two page coverage, focusing on the anniversary celebrations a well as the construction and dedication of the chapel.
