The Church has a comprehensive program for teaching children called Primary which was founded in 1878. Its purpose is to teach children the gospel of Jesus Christ and help them learn to live its principles.
The program is for all children ages 3 to 11 and is held for two hours each Sunday while parents participate in their weekly meetings. Currently over one million children attend Primary worldwide.
In April of 2010, Sister Rosemary M. Wixom was called as the general president of the Primary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Sister Jean A. Stevens and Sister Cheryl A. Esplin were also called to serve with her as first and second counselors.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to serve (God's) children," said Sister Wixom in a news conference following the announcement. "There are only two requirements for this calling; to love the Lord and to love His children. Our greatest concern is that children know who they are and that they are loved," she said.
