Lending assistance to flood victims in Europe (Updated 2 August 2021)

AntweilerDOWNLOAD

Extensive flooding has left a trail of destruction in parts of Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. Many have lost their lives or their livelihood. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has congregations in the areas affected by the disaster and is encouraging its members to lend a helping hand.

“Our hearts and prayers are with those who are suffering,” said Christian Ottiker, Welfare and Self-Reliance Manager for the Church in the Europe Area. His department is currently coordinating with local congregations, relief organisations, and the authorities to identify initiatives with the greatest need and impact.

In the meantime, members of the Church are encouraged to support local efforts to provide relief to flood victims. They may contact their own county administration or reputable charities to offer assistance. Those who wish to make a financial contribution are invited to donate to the Church’s Humanitarian Fund to enable projects which benefit people in need.

Update 22 July 2021:

Members and missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been actively involved in relief efforts following devastating flooding in Western Europe.

Twenty missionaries from the Germany Frankfurt Mission arrived in the Eifel region in Germany on Monday, 19 July 2021 with twenty more to follow towards the end of the week. Working with local members and the authorities, they are sorting donated goods, emptying basements and houses as well as a school of special needs children in the city of Schleiden. Under the direction of local Church leadership and the authorities, additional twenty missionaries are serving outside of Koblenz since Thursday, 22 July 2021. These efforts will continue for at least for another 10 to 14 days.

Several other service projects are ongoing or will soon unfold. Church members from Belgium assisted with clean-up efforts in Liège. More updates will follow.
